Volume 6

“Even if the coffee trees should not blossom, nor the cherry be on the branches,
the produce of the garden fail, and the field yield no food, the flock be cut off from the fold,
and there be no herd in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the unfailing love and grace of my Maker,
to act justly and to love mercy, for God is my Lord and strength. He gives my soul full nourishment
like a well-watered garden.” Sam Say, Founder, Bolaven Farms

Bolaven Farms model unfolding
> The business model being tested at Bolaven Farms is bold and promising. It goes much further than paying fair and
dignified prices to coffee farmers. We are digging out the roots of poverty and working to eradicate poverty one
family at a time. By implementing our Integrated Organic System for the benefit of our people, land productivity
could double as soils are replenished. Our model adds social value as lives are transformed, and personal dignity
is restored as poverty is eliminated.

Bolaven Farms in Laos
> Our coffee trees are out-performing those of other farms in the region by 30-35% in comparative measurements
of tree height, crown and stem, which affirms our Integrated Organic System to be working. Gilbert Suico, our
Managing and Teaching Agriculturist, is smiling.
> Our national team of Management Trainees is starting to take ownership of the Bolaven Farms vision, to invest
and empower the farming poor to break the cycle of poverty and build a stronger nation.
> Bolaven Farms committed to buy 300 tons of coffee beans from the local AGPC Cooperative this coming harvest.
Placing great emphasis on quality, Bolaven Farms has offered a 10% bonus on top of Fair Trade prices for villages
    achieving quality target.
> Frog farming is progressing well with minimal economic inputs, they are fed with grass and 5% rice bran. It looks
like we have found an economical, yummy source of protein for our farmers.
> Fish is another source of quality protein for our farmers. We have dug two fish ponds and have begun farming
catfish and tilapia. Get ready for a fish fry!
> Earth worm cultivation and composting are embraced by the Government, we are urged to expand which we did.
>  We have started performing artificial inseminations on our herd of cattle. We anticipate a staggering 100%
improvement in the live weight of our first generation with weights increasing from 200 kilos to 400 kilos during
the same grow-out period of two years.
> Leo Nevado is teaching conversational English to one children’s class and two adult classes.
> The farm welcomed two baby girls and two baby boys to the community in July and August.
> Joei Alanano finished his one-year term at the farm as Farm Intern and returned to the Philippines in early August.
> Please continue to petition with us for land to be made available to our graduates. The village elder led Gil,
Somphit and Sam on a walk of the targeted land. Such beautiful land!
